Also known as systems/business analysis.  The process involves looking at the operations of your business and determining how technology can benefit it's overall operation.  As an analyst you ask yourself, what and were are the inefficiencies in the business.  Is there repeated data entry of the same data.  Can this data be captured using technology instead of utilizing data entry.  Is there an over use of paper, can this be reduced.  And many other questions!

A database is used when the business needs to store data that is used often and data that requires modification.  It also enables the business to integrate the data into other programs, or derive the data from other sources.  For example a Human Resource Department could store important documents and policies in the database and access them as a digital document, thus enabling them to email, convert and view the documents in various formats.  

There are many other benefits to using a database and their use depends upon whether it is beneficial for the business.
